How Much CBD Oil Should I Take?

By now, you have probably heard about the reported health benefits of CBD (if not, you can learn more about them below!). CBD has been hailed by some as an effective natural remedy for a wide range of ailments.

CBD oil, in particular, is one of the most popular CBD products on the market. It’s easy to take, it’s an efficient way of getting the CBD into your system and it has longer-lasting effects. But the question on many peoples’ lips is “how much CBD oil should I take?”

Unfortunately, there is no short and simple answer to this question. CBD products are still relatively new and therefore research into the compound itself is still in its infancy, so there isn’t a sufficient amount of scientific evidence to draw clear-cut conclusions from.

However, that doesn’t mean you should have to guess how much CBD oil to take. In this blog post, we’ll help you to figure out how much CBD oil you should be taking and cover everything you need to consider when trying to find the right CBD oil dosage for you.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of more than a hundred compounds (known as cannabinoids) found within the Cannabis plant, Cannabis sativa. At CBVIT, we source all of our CBD from EU-approved hemp plants, which is a type of cannabis plant with relatively low concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of CBD.

While many people automatically associate the cannabis plant with getting high, CBD doesn’t have this same mind-altering effect. That’s because CBD doesn’t contain any THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound found within the cannabis plant. As a result, CBD is completely legal and safe for use and consumption.

CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the hemp plant, and then diluting it with a carrier oil such as hemp seed oil. At CBVIT, we use a supercritical CO2 extraction method, which is the most efficient method and results in a product that contains no nasty and unwanted compounds.

Furthermore, the hemp plant we use in the extraction process is 100% free of pesticide, microbes and heavy metals, meaning there is no cross contamination.

Because CBD products are still quite new and there hasn’t been enough substantive research conducted into the compound, there are currently no official scientific guidelines outlining a recommended daily allowance for CBD oil (or any CBD products, for that matter).

At CBVIT, however, our extensive research and expertise has allowed us to devise a perfectly safe and effective dosage guideline for our CBD oils. When using our range of Active Hemp™ CBD Oils, we recommend taking 5 to 10 drops per day (up to 48.6mg), once a day (in other words, take them all in one go). This dosage guideline applies to both adults and children.

Exactly how many drops of CBD oil you take depends on numerous factors, including:

  • Concentration -- Not all CBD oils are made the same -- some are stronger than others. You can tell by looking at the percentage in the name of the product or on the label of the bottle. The higher the percentage, the higher the concentration of CBD. At CBVIT, we offer a range of CBD oils from 5% through to 16% strength (more on those below).
  • Body weight -- Much like alcohol, your body weight and size can affect the impact that CBD has. Generally speaking, heavier people need higher doses to experience the effects of CBD. Lighter people, on the other hand, may feel the same effects with a lower dose.
  • Condition -- How much CBD oil you take also depends on the desired results you’re trying to achieve. Those experiencing high levels of pain, discomfort or anxiety may need to take a higher dose to alleviate their symptoms, whereas a person with a milder condition may prefer a lower dose with less pronounced effects.
  • Tolerance -- CBD consumers may develop a tolerance over time, resulting in reduced effects from the same dosage. Therefore, you may need to increase your dosage in order to achieve the desired results.

As you can see, finding the optimal CBD oil dosage may involve a bit of fine-tuning. If you’re brand new to CBD oil, we recommend starting off with 5 drops per day of whichever oil you have and gradually increasing your dosage if required (without exceeding 10 drops per day, or 48.6mg). You may find it helpful to record your results as you adjust your dosage. Everyone is different and there are numerous variables involved, so how much CBD oil you take depends on what works best for you.

If you are currently on any prescription medication, please consult with your doctor before taking any CBD drops.

To take our Active Hemp™ CBD Oil, simply place drops under your tongue, wait 60 seconds and then swallow. You can wash it down with water if you like. You should wait at least 30 minutes before eating after taking the drops.

This method is not only incredibly easy, but effective, too. Letting CBD oil absorb under your tongue -- as opposed to consuming it as an edible and subjecting it to the digestive tract -- preserves more of the CBD and you’ll feel the results faster and for longer. When applied sublingually (under the tongue), the effects of CBD can last up to four hours.

The amount of CBD you get per drop depends on which CBD oil product you’re using. Some products contain a higher concentration of CBD than others -- you can tell by looking at the percentage in the product name or on the label. The higher the percentage, the higher the strength of CBD there is in each drop.

(Note: the miligram (mg) amount that you see on the label of a bottle isn’t how much CBD you get per drop -- that’s the total amount of CBD that the bottle contains.)

Our Active Hemp™ CBD Oils contain the following:

So taking 5 drops of Active Hemp™ CBD Oil 5% means you’ll get 8.1mg of CBD per day. Taking 5 drops of our Active Hemp™ CBD Oil 11% means you’ll get 16.2mg of CBD per day. And taking 5 drops of Active Hemp™ CBD Oil 16% means you’ll get 24.3mg of CBD each day.

No, thankfully. Much like cannabis itself, CBD is non-lethal meaning you can’t overdose on it, no matter how much you take. This was confirmed by a recent report by the National Cancer Institute, which found that overdosing on CBD is virtually impossible.

While research into other possible side effects is still ongoing, many experts agree that CBD is relatively safe. Based on its chemistry alone, we know that CBD doesn’t get you high. Additional research shows that it’s non-addictive and carries very few known side effects or withdrawal symptoms upon stoppage of use.

The best way to make sure that the CBD product you’re using is safe is by using CBD products from brands that submit their products to third-party testing organizations and publish the results of these tests online.

At CBVIT, all of our Active Hemp™ CBD Oils have been approved and accredited by Aquatest, so you can rest assured that they’re of the highest quality and contain no synthetic ingredients or artificial preservatives.

While research is still ongoing and definitive conclusions have yet to be made, there is growing evidence -- both scientific and anecdotal -- to suggest that CBD has many health benefits.

One thing we know for sure is that the body has a specialised system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates various cognitive and physiological processes such as mood, sleep, appetite, pain and the immune system in order to promote homeostasis (or equilibrium) in the body.

The body naturally produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system. Initial research has shown that CBD interacts positively with the endocannabinoid system, helping to alleviate pain, improve sleep quality, increase appetite, and reduce stress.

Whether you’re looking to treat a specific condition or simply improve your overall health, by introducing CBVIT’s Active Hemp™ CBD Oil into your daily routine, you can reap the many potential health benefits of CBD.
